French Immersion

French Immersion is a Canadian-made educational program in which a child, whose first language is not French, studies in French. Students have the option to enter the program in kindergarten or grade one, or late immersion in grade 5. • French Immersion is designed for children that are just discovering the language and previous experience is not required • Learning a second language has been shown to bring cognitive and academic benefits • Opens up career opportunities • Research has shown that learning a second language could have a positive effect on first language development • French students are eligible for a larger pool of post secondary and scholarships • Travel and exchange opportunities • Children are functionally bilingual by grade 12 • Builds a foundation for learning additional languages • École Connaught has a dedicated music teacher and a physical education teacher Research shows that French Immersion is the most effective way for a child to become functionally bilingual. French Immersion in Alberta is the delivery of the curriculum guidelines using French as the language of instruction. Children may enter the program in Kindergarten or Grade One and transfer in from another immersion program at any time.
